I wouldn't call disappearing acorns spooky. I had a hazelnut tree in one house and the squirrels, which were fairly rare in Bulgaria, got them all. The tree was covered in nuts in the early stages, stripped by the time I thought they were getting ripe.

Dripping water scares me. We had a plumbing disaster that caused serious damage.

Sikh, if you have dogs, horses and chickens, are you really alone? I've got two dogs and one cat right here in the room with me and another cat and dog asleep elsewhere. I'm frequently without human companionship, but almost never alone.

Aw, I'm biased but a cat is the best present you can give to a house!

It's nice that you like my image shot through yellow shutters of that old French house: I shot it maybe 10 or so years ago as part of a feature I'd offered to leading UK newspaper supplement, The Guardian Weekend, on the French home of a lady who'd become a celebrated model for Picasso in 1954.
But I withdrew from Houzz some time ago (I have just signed up again in order to post comments) since I found my images being ripped off from this site, and widely pirated. I'm a pro: I shoot pictures for money. They are valuable intellectual property. I do not permit them to be used for free. Sorry, but if you want to continue to use this image here, I'll need your contact details so I can bill you. Otherwise, take the image down. Thanks - Anthony

I had a custom daybed (recamier) made this summer, and I love it. I'm writing this comment sitting on it right now! I had bolsters made with a contrasting upholstery and I have one decorative pillow at the "head end" and a quilted throw over the entire seat cushion (the upholstery is pure white and I want to keep it that way!) but I didn't want to go overboard with lots of pillows because I have done that on the other two couches in the room.

The reason I chose the backless daybed style was so I could place it in front of a huge floor to ceiling window without it feeling like the window was blocked by furniture.

As someone who has gardened in 3 states and 4 countries, I recommend local advice. Gardening, particularly vegetable gardening, is full of rules of thumb that often assume a climate and soil. Talk to your neighbors who have great gardens. Read books or magazines tailored to your climate.

I particularly found the contrast between England and Russia amusing. "Cold tolerant" in England's mild climate means something very different from "Cold tolerant" in Russia. Difficult northern conditions in England refers to Yorkshire's 4 months of night temperatures reliably over 10 degrees C; difficult northern conditions in Arkhanglesk, Russia means barely over one month of above 10c night temperatures.

This is a big issue in the US, where the climate in the continental states range from Maine and N. Dakota to Florida and S. Texas. Even so, there's quite a difference between Kentucky and Massachusetts, even if there's a huge overlap of plants.

Do you include adding lime to the lawn when you talk about fertilizing? When do you add lime?
